This week is our trip to DC comics. I admit I’m a bit excited about it, but at the same time I don’t want to go. What’s the point anyway? Bunch of editors who only accepted this out of their respect for Joe Kubert.
So of course they’re not going to be interested in what we have to show them (and who blames them, we all suck).
I talked to a bunch of editors and teachers about my portfolio, and the most common thing they had to say was that I should do illustrations for magazines, and that comics isn’t my strongest side. It kind of frustrates me. I wonder what they say to guys who are less talented than me. Do they demoralize them to from doing comics as well? Or are they discouraging me simply because there are so few female artists in this industry? (I can’t help but to notice that my male classmates don’t get to hear stuff they tell me) Mike Marts the DC editor pretty much told me to give up on comics and do what his wife does. Design toys.
The only person who has so far been encouraging me to do comics has so far been Joe himself, though he told me today that I have an advantage with publishers because I am a girl.
I don’t even know what to think of that.
I’m not going to complain and bitch about how people treat me differently as a woman. Everybody gets treated differently because of they are. Doesn’t matter if you’re black, white, man, woman, handicapped, rich, poor, Jewish or Satanist. People will automatically put you in a group and think they know everything about you just because you belong to that group, and they start judging you accordingly. And you’d be lying if you tell me you haven’t grouped people like that yourself.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to justify such action. I think it’s wrong. But that’s what makes us human. We keep doing what’s wrong.
So all I’m trying to say is that for all the women out there who thinks they are being treated differently, and unfair. Get over it. If you’re a strong woman, you’ll make it. You won’t care what people think or say about the fact you’re a woman. You just do what YOU want to do, and fight for your rights. Ok I’ll stop being too preachy now.

*still torn about the DC trip*

Helsa, You're Very talented. Who cares what people say about making comics, you're not going to learn everything about making them in the 3 Years you were at the JKS. At times like these, all you can is move forward, which by my understanding of this update, you are.

honestly dude you sound like you have the right attitude to go in there and show them your stuff. it doesn't matter if they hire you or not because the bottom line is that they aren't the only game in town, and they will more than likely give you constructive feedback that you can use to your own benefit in the future. a lot of people who read comics seem to not realize this or (in a lot of cases) not even pay attention to the other publishers out there. and as far as pigeonholing artists in doing something that they seem "equipped" to do i say fuck that royally. if you wanna draw comics draw comics. you know how many times people told me that my 'style' was an 'indie style' and that i'd never work on a mainstream book? it's a horrible attitude to have and it waters down our already struggling industry. draw because you like to draw and draw for yourself. don't draw to appease masses of assholes. fuck everybody and do what thou wilt. and maybe what thou wilt is a groundbreaking work in the art of telling stories using words and pictures. amen.
